GOTHIC REVIVAL FEATURES IN THE APRIL SELECT INTERIORS AUCTION

GOTHIC REVIVAL FEATURES IN THE APRIL SELECT INTERIORS AUCTION

The gothic revival style dominated architecture and interior design of landmark buildings in the Victorian era.  The most notable example of the styles characteristic ornate flying buttresses, rib vaulting, pointed arches and ornate decor is seen in the Palace of Westminster.  Sir Charles Barry and August Welby Pugin rebuilt the palace following a disastrous fire in 1834.  Pugin’s eye for detail and ability to deliver complex designs flourished in forming the exuberant interiors.

A coal scuttle in the forthcoming Select Interiors auction bears all the characteristics of a classic Pugin design and carries the Houses of Parliament insignia depicting a portcullis on one of the sloping hinged covers.   The copper and brass mounted scuttle of rectangular form sits on a raised plinth and has a 'quilted' swing handle.  It is similar in form to a coal scuttle sold for £2,750 (including buyer’s premium) in the Paul Reeves: An Eye for Design featuring Textiles as Art II auction on 14 February 2019, lot 15, Lyon and Turnbull.

The coal scuttle will be offered in the Select Interiors auction on 26 April 2023.
