Florence Audrie Gie
Featuring as lots 253-259 in the Interiors auction of 16 June is a series of paintings by Florence Audrie Gie.
Born 18 November 1922 in Cape Town, South Africa, Florence was brought to UK when 8 months old and settled in Tiverton, Devon until she joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service at seventeen years of age.
During the war she as at Bletchley Park, after which she went to the Art School at Tiverton. When she was 19 years old she took her portfolio to London. She worked in a pub and other jobs and at the same time ‘hawked’ her work around the artistic establishments. Florence was finally given a post at Covent Garden Art Department, she became Head of Department. She was also employed to provide the printing and design for Coventry Cathedral vestments. At some stage she spent some time in America.
She was head hunted to work on the costumes for the film ‘The Charge of the Light Brigade’ in Turkey, during which time there was an earthquake which meant the filming had to continue in Yorkshire.
Following on from this, her career included working as Head of Department at Wimbledon Art College. Eventually she retired but continued working on commissions at her studio home which, incidentally, was previously owned by Jacob Epstein, the famous sculptor.
