The Ronald Hazell Collection
We are delighted to offer the personal collection of locally admired connoisseur, Ronald Hazell, for sale on 24 June.
This truly eclectic collection will have broad appeal covering a wide range of interest areas and aesthetics ranging ceramics, sculpture, Lalique glass, maritime models, paintings, sporting guns, taxidermy, rocking horses and gentlemen’s accessories.
Ronald Hazell was a talented businessman who lived life generously and to the full. He moved to Somerset from Sussex in the late 1980s with his wife and young family, first buying a garage in South Petherton. Business grew, and he took the opportunity to become a partner in a Renault dealership before moving on to own Ash Honda Yeovil and Ash of Dorchester.
Led by his curious mind, Ronald sought out and collected the best that he could buy, enjoying the research and investigation as much as the hunt. The auction in June will be a celebration of his joy for collecting and his breadth of interest.
Highlights include an exceptional Heywood Hardy (British, 1843-1933) painting, best known for his paintings of horses. ‘Arrival of the Coach’ depicts the moment a stage coach enters a village, with the tavern behind and much fevered excitement expressed on the faces of those present (estimate: £5000-8000).
Leading the way in the sporting guns section is a magnificent rare Wheel-Lock rifle with octagonal barrel, inlaid and engraved with mythological figures with an estimate of £3000-5000. There are also a number of cased pistol pairs, including a pair of target pistols with browned octagonal sighted rifle barrels by Le Page (estimate: £3500-4500) which will appeal widely to collectors.
Ronald enjoyed travel and would often return with treasures from their time away such as Murano glass from Venice which feature in the glass section alongside Lalique pieces. Ronald’s interests were wide and varied from cars to shooting to carriage driving to tending Bonsais. He loved dining out and hosted easily, he especially loved Christmas – a time when every room would be dressed with a tree and his generosity flowed. He bought renowned maker Stevenson rocking horses for each member of the family and they feature in the auction. A Golden Jubilee special edition coach-sprung trestle rocking horse, created in celebration of Her Majesty the Queen’s 50th year on the throne, will be offered at an estimate of £1500-2500.
The Hazell family are downsizing, taking this moment to share the collection built up by their beloved Dad over his lifetime with other passionate collectors who will appreciate Ronald’s love for the finer things in life. The auction will be on view from Sunday 20 June to Wednesday 23 June, with the auction taking place on Thursday 24 June at 10:30am.
Further auctions of The Ronald Hazell Collection will be held in the coming months including whisky and automobilia.
